PROVIDENCE COLLEGE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS SWEEP BLUE DEVIL INVITATIONAL 





Champagne and Terry take individual titles as the Friars cruise in their respective season openers.  





NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams were dominant in their respective season-opening races Saturday, claiming both team and individual titles at the Central Connecticut State Blue Devil Invitational. 




The Friar women placed four runners in the top six, besting the 10 team field with a total score of 25 points. 





Providence was paced by junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). Champagne crossed the finish line first by completing the rolling five kilometer course in a time of 17:31. Sophomore teammate Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) was second overall with a 17:43. Junior Rebecca Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin Ireland) took fifth place in 18:07, just ahead of the sixth place, 18:11 effort of senior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) Junior Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.) completed the scoring. Her time of 18:28 was good for 11th place. 




For the team totals, Quinnipiac was second with 52 points, ahead of UConn (88), Monmouth (134), Sacred Heart (153), Mount St. Mary's (178), host Central Connecticut (189), Bryant (206), Southern Connecticut (210), and Holy Cross (262). 




The Providence men also took control of their race early and garnered the top three spots en route to a team total of 30 points. 




Junior Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.) led the 8K endeavor from start to finish, claiming first place in a time of 25:31. Sophomore Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) was second in 25:48, followed by freshman Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.) Hernandez completed his collegiate debut in 26:24 to earn third. Junior Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) was 11th, crossing in 27:01. Freshman teammate Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand) completed the scoring for Providence by grabbing 13th place in a time of 27:04. 




The Sacred Heart men were a distant second (62 pts), followed by Monmouth (70), Central Connecticut (78), Mount St. Mary's (146), Quinnipiac (184), Holy Cross (`85), Bryant (187), and Southern Connecticut (195).  




The Providence women next compete at the Roy Griack Invitational in Minneapolis on September 25. The men are off until October 2, when they head to Madison, Wisconsin for the Adidas Invitational.
