Providence College Track Teams Kick Off Season with Two Meets in Two Days
Friars compete at Fordham Meet and Alden Invitational.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s indoor track teams kicked off the season this weekend, competing in the Fordham Opener at the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse on Friday and the Alden Invitational at Brown on Saturday.

At Brown, the Friars turned in several strong performances. On the women’s side, junior Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) was victorious in the 3000-meters, cruising in with a time of 10:06.15, over 36 seconds faster than the next closest runner.

Senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) earned second in the mile with a time of 5:08.30, while freshman Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) capped her debut weekend with a second-place run in the 1000-meters, clocking in at 3:02.84.

On the men’s side, the Friars earned two, first-place performances. Junior Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) crossed first in the 1000-meters with a 2:37.34. Senior Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) led a Friar sweep of the top four places in the 3000, winning the race in 8:27.88. Freshman Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) was second in 8:30.20, while sophomore Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.) grabbed third in 8:31.17.

Also of note, the men’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.), Chris Booker (Philadelphia, Pa.), Matt Conti (Cohoes, N.Y.), and Rebovich placed third in 3:27.11.

Friday at Fordham, the PC women got a second-place effort in the 400-meters, as freshman Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut with a time of 1:01.7. In the mile, sophomore Elizabthe DeVivo (Riverside, Conn.) was third in 5:29.5.

The Friar men were paced by Hernandez, as the sophomore took top honors in the mile, his first race of the school year, with a time of 4:21.4. Hernandez crossed just ahead of Brunelle at 4:24.1.

Andrews shined in his season debut, placing second in the 200 with a time of 23.1. Rebovich and Booker went two-three in the 800 with times of 1:57.8 and 2:00.0, respectively.

The Friars are now off until next semester. The women will race in the Little Rhody Invitational at URI on January 21. The Friar men will take part in the Greater Boston Invitational in January 22.
