Providence College Cross Country Teams Shine at Wisconsin Adidas Invitational
Friar men are top BIG EAST team amid stacked field.
MADISON, WISC – The nationally-ranked Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Friday in the Wisconsin adidas invitational.
With the men’s race featuring a crowded field of 39 teams, 20 of which were nationally ranked, the #24 Friars claimed ninth overall. In addition, Providence was the top BIG EAST squad to place.
Leading the way was a pack of three Friars who crossed in quick succession. Senior All-American David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland), earned 21st place out of 270 runners, completing the the 8-kilometer endeavor in 24:10.8, one minute shy of the overall winner, Arizona’s Lawi Lalang (23:10.8).
On McCarthy’s heels was classmate Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), whose 24:12.0 sealed 22nd place. Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) continues his strong debut campaign, earning 31st with a posting of 24:18.0.
Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand; 24:50.7) and junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.; 25:14.9) rounded out the scoring by placing 104th and 165th, respectively.
Overall, the Friars tallied 343 points. Host Wisconsin got the win with 66.
The #2 Friar women, running without All-Americans Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), still placed a pair in the top 20 of a crowded field that featured 19 nationally ranked teams.
Senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was the top Friar to cross. She placed 14th out of 305 runners, completing the 6-kilomter race in 20:27.3, 25 seconds shy of the overall winner, Villanova’s Sheila Reid (20:02.5).
Sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) earned 19th, clocking in at 20:37.0. Senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland), running her first meet of the season, placed 99th with a time of 21:17.3.
Sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia; 21:23.9) and senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.;22:16.3) rounded out the scoring in 113th and 235th, respectively.
The Friars totaled 480 points. Washington took the meet with 199.
Up next for the programs is the Central Connecticut Mini-Meet in New Britain, Conn. on October 21, followed by the BIG EAST Championships on October 29.
