#7 Providence College Women’s Cross Country Places Second at BIG EAST Championships
McCarthy Places Second overall to pace #14 men.

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The seventh-ranked Providence College women’s cross country team placed second at the BIG EAST Championships Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park. The Friars were edged by defending champion Villanova by just nine points, 54-63, despite placing three runners in the top nine.
Meanwhile the 14th-ranked Friar men nearly produced their second individual champion in two years, as senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) placed second overall, leading PC to fifth-place in the team results.

In the women’s 6-kilometer event, Friar sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) led the team with a 4th place finish. Her time of 19:57.4 was 16.8 seconds behind the overall winner, Villanova’s Sheila Reid (19:40.9). It is the second year in a row Providence has earned a top-four placing at the event.

Providence sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) continued her solid campaign with a sixth-place timing of 20:12.6. Senior teammate Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) then turned in her best finish at the BIG EAST Championships, earning ninth with a time of 20:19.0.

Senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) also earned her best BIG EAST finish, crossing in 19th with 20:43.5 on the clock.

Junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) placed 25th to round out the Friar scoring, crossing the line in 20:58.2.

The combined efforts helped PC outrun five other nationally-ranked opponents, including Georgetown, the No. 6 team in the nation.

It is also the Friars’ best BIG EAST finish since 2007 (when they were also second). They have placed somewhere in the top-five every year since 1985.

McCarthy completed the 8-kilometer men’s race in 23:29.3, 12.4 seconds behind the winner, Cincinnati’s Eric Finan (23:17.7). It is McCarthy’s best finish at the event, topping a third-place effort in 2008.

The Friars earned a 17th place time from senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), who crossed in 24:06.4. Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) continued his strong debut with a 28th-place clocking of 24:20.9.

Providence then sealed its point total with freshman Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) and senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) grabbing 34th and 35th, respectively. Connor finished in 24:29.1. Matthews posted 24:32.4

The group added up to a final score of 116 points. Villanova also won the men’s team-title, tallying 43 points.

The PC men have now placed in the top-five in 17 consecutive seasons and in 31 of the 33 years the race has been contested.

The Friars return to action on November 12, when both teams compete in the NCAA Regionals, held this season in Buffalo, N.Y.
