Providence College Track and Field Excels at
Stony Brook Quad Meet

Hopkins, Hernandez lead men; Champagne,
Pantezelos and Isabelle claim victories for women.

STONY BROOK, N.Y.  – The Providence College Track and Field teams turned in several strong performances Wednesday at the Stony Brook Quad meet, beginning the outdoor campaign in earnest against Marist, Bryant and the host Seawolves.

On the men’s side, sophomore Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) took top honors in the 3000-meters, crossing in 8:34.59, exactly 15 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

Another Friar highlight came courtesy the 1500-meters. Sophomore Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.) led a PC sweep of the top three spots, winning in 4:01.45. Senior Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) was second with a clocking of 4:02.30 and freshman Phelan McCormick (Pearl River, N.Y.) placed third in 4:03.12.

Providence placed two men at the front of the 800-meter field. Junior Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) was second with a posting of 1:56.41, just ahead of classmate Alex Wallace (Waipakurau, New Zealand) and his time of 1:56.88.

Other top finishes included sophomore Gerry Briand (Bernardsville, N.Y.), who was second in the 200-meters  with a dash of 23.30 seconds, and the 4 x 800 relay team of Chris  Booker (Philadelphia, Pa.), Matt Conti (Cohoes, N.Y.), McCormack and Wallace (7:57.22).

On the women’s side, Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) took first in the 3000. The senior crossed in 9:52.50, just ahead of sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) in 10:00.03.

Sophomore Laura Isabelle (Troy, N.Y.) was victorious in the 800 with a clocking of 2:16.6, just ahead of classmate Molly McCann (Rockville Center, N.Y.) in 2:19.34.

Freshman Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) continued her strong debut, narrowly missing the BIG EAST standard in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:39.7.

The Friars also struck for a win in the field events, with sophomore Maria Pantezelos (Danvers, Mass.) claiming the shot put with a throw of 9:26 meters. Senior Caileigh Grove (Franklin, Mass.) earned second with a toss of 8.30 meters.
In the sprints, sophomore Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.) was third in the 100 meters with a 13.33, while freshman Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass.) and Caroline Callaghan (Rochester, N.H.) was 2- in the 300 with times of 43:35 and 43:61 respectively.

Also of note, the Friar 4 x 200 of Lavigne, Dermody, Pantezelos and Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.) placed second (1:47.47).

Providence returns to action at the Brown Invitational on April 14.
