Providence College Track and Field's Emily Sisson Qualifies for Olympic Trials.
Friar Track and Field Excels at Mt. Sac Relays and Ellis Invitational.

WALNUT, CALIF. – The Providence College track and field teams turned in a weekend of outstanding performances, tackling two events on opposite sides of the country.

Distance standout Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) took on the 5000-meter field at the ultra-competitive Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., earning a berth into the United States Olympic Trials. The sophomore crossed the line in 15:34:54, nearly 14 seconds faster than her personal record entering this year. The time, which should help Sisson contend for a place in the NCAA first round, was less than 19 seconds shy of the event winner, American record holder and Providence resident Molly Huddle (15:15.91).

PC sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) also ran well at Mt. Sac, joining Sisson in BIG EAST qualifying with a 5000-meter time of 16:54.27.

On the east coast, several Friars set themselves up nicely for the postseason with outstanding runs at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University. Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) sizzled through the 1500-meters with a clocking of 3:44.45. The effort marked Matthews fastest 1500 since he ran 3:41.72 at last spring’s Mt. Sac Relays.

Also in the 1500, junior Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) qualified for the upcoming conference championships with a clocking of 3:52.42.

Countryman Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) also impressed at Princeton, finishing the 5000-meters with a posting of 14:06.69. Like Matthews’, Channon’s time qualified for the BIG EAST Championships and should be in contention for entry into the first round of the NCAA’s.

Four other Friars qualified for the conference championships while in New Jersey.  Running in the 5000-meters, senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.; 17:04.22), junior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.; 17:05.46), sophomore Erin Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.; 17:22.22) and freshman Julie Solimine (Haverill, Mass.; 17:30.66) all surpassed the BIG EAST standard.

The Friars return to action on April 26 at the prestigious Penn Relays.
