Wins BIG EAST Championship

Nagel Second in Women’s 5K as Friars Strong on Day One.

NEW YORK, N.Y.  – The Providence College track and field teams have begun the BIG EAST Championships in fine fashion, leaving Day One at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory with one conference title and a second place finish.

It was the men’s distance medley relay team who captured the title. The quartet featured freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), sophomore Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.), senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) and senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland). Anchor McCarthy, running the mile, crossed at 9:41.26, 1.39 seconds faster than second-place Georgetown.

McCarthy's mile split was a remarkable 3:56.3.

All-time, the Providence men have now won 58 BIG EAST titles indoors. The program’s last indoor crowns came in 2009 when McCarthy won the 3000-meters and anchored the DMR to victory. Also that winter, former Friar Hayden McLaren ’09 captured the 1000.

On the women’s side, Saturday, the story was Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand). The sophomore earned second in the 5000-meters, finishing in 16:25.81 – just .28 of a second behind the winner, Villanova’s Bogdana Mimic (16:25.53).

Nagel’s time shattered the qualifying standard for the ECAC Championships.

Also fairing well in the 5K was junior Sam Roecker Charlton, N.Y.), who also qualified for the ECAC meet with a 17:11.88.

In the day’s other finals of note, the women’s DMR of senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), freshman Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.), freshman Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) and senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) placed fifth in a time of 11:35.74. For the men, senior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) was 12th in the 5000 with a clocking of 14:31.45 – surpassing the qualifying standard for the IC4A’s.

Several Friars set themselves up nicely for Day Two’s events tomorrow. For the men, Matthews turned in the best time in the 1000-meter preliminary heats. His effort of 2:24.8 was over a second faster than the next closest competitor. In the mile, classmate Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) also advanced to tomorrow’s finals with a posting of 4:13.35.

And two members of the women’s squad will move on in the mile run. Sophomore Emily Sisson (chesterfield, Mo.) cruised in at 4:48.97. That time, which shatters the ECAC qualifying standard, was the second fastest of the day. Classmate Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) is advancing with a 4:57.99 performance.

Also on tap tomorrow are the 3000-meter finals, featuring two Providence All-Americans. For the men, it’s McCarthy’s opportunity to pull off the same double victory he did in 2009. Davidson will be representing the PC women.
