McCarthy Breaks New England Collegiate, Providence School-Record in Mile

Sisson third fastest in nation as track teams triumph at Terrier Invitational.


BOSTON, MASS. – Providence College senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) has set the New England Collegiate record, as well as the Providence College mark, for the mile-run. McCarthy blazed to a time of 3:55.75 Saturday at the Terrier Invitational at Boston University.

The clocking breaks the previous PC record of 3:56.29, set by former Friar great Andy Keith in 1994.

McCarthy bettered his own personal best at the distance by two seconds. In addition, the All-American cruised past the NCAA qualifying standard by a similar margin. His effort is the best in the country thus far this season.

On the women’s side, sophomore Emily Sisson shined in her first ever mile-run, earning the third-fastest time in the nation this season with a remarkable 4:38.91.

Also running well in the women’s mile was classmate Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand). The sophomore crossed in 4:46.53, ahead of senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) in 5:06.90. Both Nagel and Champagne joined Sisson in qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships.

Another strong race for the women’s team was the 3000-meters. Again, three Friars qualified for the conference championships. Senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led the way with a 9:22.53. She was followed by fellow senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) in 9:40.66 and sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) in 9:57.78.

In the 1000-meters, freshman Devyn Pryor continued to impress with a BIG EAST worthy 2:57.31. Junior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) will also run in the BIG EAST title race, having qualified in the 5000-meters with a time of 17:30.99.

On the men’s side, senior Julian Matthews followed McCarthy in the mile with a posting of 4:02.08, good for fifth in the crowded field. Classmate Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) earned a time of 4:14.18. Both men qualified for the BIG EAST’s.

Another highlight on the men’s side was freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland). Running the 3000-meters, Quinn’s 8:06.73 was over 20 faster than the BIG EAST qualifying standard. Also, sophomore Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend Wales) qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 5000-meters, cruising in at 14:45.43.

Sophomore Nik Andrews continues his strong indoor season in the 400-meters, qualifying for the BIG EAST’s with a clocking of 49.65.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 4 at the URI Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
