Providence College Track and Field To Send Three Student-Athletes to NCAA’s

Sisson and Ffrench O’Carroll impress in 5000-meters, will join Greany
at national championships.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – Three student-athletes will represent Providence College at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and senior Charlotte French O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) all impressed at the East Preliminaries this weekend, punching their tickets to their sport’s biggest collegiate stage.

Sunday night, the story was Sisson’s performance in the women’s 5000-meter semifinals. The sophomore led her race from gun to tape, easily outrunning the field to claim the top overall time in the event with a 15:53.62. In fact, the next closest competitor, Florida State’s Kayleigh Tyerman, was nearly 13 seconds behind in 16:06.28.

In the event’s other heat, Ffrench O’Carroll claimed third place with a clocking of 16:23.81. The top five finishers from each heat, plus the next two fastest runners, advanced to the NCAA’s. Sisson, Ffrench O’Carroll, and the rest of the East qualifiers will now join the top 12 competitors from the West region to form the championship field.

The 5000-meter finals will be run on Saturday, June 9, at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Greany earned her way late Friday night in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase, placing third in her quarterfinal heat with a clocking of 10:05.95.  The top three finishers in each of those three heats, plus the next three fastest performers, moved on. Greany and the eleven representatives from the East will also meet the 12 qualifiers from the West to form the semifinal field on Wednesday, June 6. The women’s steeplechase final is scheduled for Friday, June 8.

Three members of the Friars’ men’s team fell just short in their qualifying bids, one by the smallest of margins. Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) placed sixth in his heat of the 1500 quarterfinals with a time of 3:49.05, a mere .06 of a second shy of an automatic berth into the semifinals in Iowa.

In the men’s 5000-meter semi’s, senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) placed 11th in his heat with a posting of 14:28.02. Classmate Lee Carey was just behind in 15th, clocking in at 14:39.35.
