Championship

Women’s team finished third and men placed fourth on Friday, Oct. 26.

BRONX, N.Y. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams
competed today (Oct. 26) at the BIG EAST Championships at Van Cortlandt
Park in the Bronx, N.Y.

The 10th-ranked Friar women finished third with 80 points. The Friars were
led by freshman-standout Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland). The
two-time BIG EAST Athlete of the Week finished second in a close race to
the finish-line. Collins’ time of 20:46.12 was just .79 seconds behind
the race-winner, Emily Lipari from Villanova.

This year’s conference championship went to Georgetown who had three top-10
finishers, and scored 58 points. Runner-up was Connecticut with 68 points.

Joining Collins for the Friars in the scoring was senior Shelby Greany
(Suffern, N.Y.), junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), senior Sam
Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and freshman Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.).
Greany finished fifth with a time of 20:56.50. She was followed by Nagel
(11th; 21:17.85). Roecker and Keating placed 24th and 38th, respectively,
to round out the scoring (21:51.74 and 22:36.82).

“A lot of positives about the women’s race, especially finishing third
without two women who are normally in our top six,” said Head Coach Ray
Treacy. “We expect to be at full strength for the first time all season at
the NCAA Regionals in two weeks time and are very optimistic about our
chances.”

Collins, Greany and Nagel all earned All-BIG EAST honors on the women’s
side for their top-15 finishes.

The men’s team finished fourth with 109 points. The team was led by
sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland). Quinn finished second in a
tight race to the finish-line with a time of 24.38.81. Syracuse’s Martin
Hehir took the individual title, crossing the finish-line 1.61 seconds
before Quinn. Syracuse was named conference champions finishing with 37
points, and four top-10 finishers.

Senior Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand) placed second for the Friar
men, finishing 12th (24:56.98) overall. Taking the third spot for the team
was junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) in his first BIG EAST
Championship appearance. Hopkins finished 27th with a time of 25:22.46.
Hopkins was closely followed by another first-timer, freshman Harvey Dixon
(Aldershot, England) who finished 30th (25:25.45). Rounding out the
scoring for the men was sophomore Benjamin Connor (Derby, England), who
finished 38th with a time of 25:37.04.

“A much improved performance from Wisconsin,” said Treacy. “To finish
fourth and beat two ranked teams was great. Shane ran a great race and was
just barely pipped on the line for the individual title.”

Quinn and Wallace both earned All-BIG EAST honors.

Both teams will compete at the NCAA Regional Championships in Madison,
Conn., on Friday, Nov. 9.
