Providence College Indoor Track Ready For BIG EAST Championship
The men’s and women’s track teams will compete at the BIG EAST Championship on Feb. 16-17 in Geneva, Ohio.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's track teams will compete at the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 16-17. The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, and resume at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) will be competing in the 1,000-meters. Matthews competed in the same event at the 2012 Championship and finished third with a time of 2:30.11. Matthews also is currently ranked sixth in the nation in the mile after competing at the Boston University Valentine Make-Up Meet on Thurs., Feb. 14. He finished second with a time of 3:58.14.
Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) will compete in the 5,000-meters. Quinn finished fourth in the 5,000-meters at last year’s championship with a time of 8:05.22.
Senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), sophomore Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.), freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) and senior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) will all compete in the 3,000-meters. Hillery finished 15th in the mile last season with a time of 4:18.22. Carey competed in the 5,000-meters at last year’s championship, and finished 12th with a time of 14:31.45.
Junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) and freshman Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) will represent the Friars in the 3,000-meters. Sisson is currently ranked third in the nation in the 5,000-meters, and is one of two BIG EAST athletes to dip below the 16-minute mark this season (15:44.4). Sisson competed in the mile last year at the BIG EAST Championship, and has excelled in the event this season. At last year’s championship, she finished fifth with a time of 4:49.52 in the mile. This season, Sisson ran a NCAA and World best time in the mile at the URI Sorlien Invitational in Kingston, R.I. on Jan. 19 with a time of 4:46.85. Nagel finished second in the 5,000-meters at the 2012 Championship with a time of 16:25.81.
Seniors Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) will be competing in the 5,000-meters. Roecker finished 12th at the 2012 Championship with a time of 17:11.88.
