Providence College Indoor Track Shines in Distance Events



Men’s and women’s track finished first in 1000m, 1 Mile and 3000m at URI Invitational on Sat., Jan. 19.

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed in their first meet since winter break on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the URI Sorlien Track and Field Invitational Kingston, R.I.  At URI, the Friars turned in several strong performances, including first place finishes in the 1000-meters, 1 Mile and 3000-meters on both the men’s and women’s sides.
The men’s team finished fourth of nine teams with 72 points.  Host school Rhode Island finished first with 239 points and Stonehill finished second overall with 98 points.
The women’s team also finished fourth with 68 points.  Rhode Island finished first with 241 points, followed by UMass Amherst with 162 points.
On the men's side, senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) finished first in the 1000-meters with a time of 2:26.69, while junior teammate Nikolas Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) placed fifth with a time of 2:36.15.  The women took four of the top-five spots in the 1000-meters.  Junior Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was the event winner with a time of 3:01.50.  McCarthy was followed by junior Molly McCann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), sophomore Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.) and junior Elizabeth DeVivo (Riverside, Conn.) who finished third through fifth, respectively.
Senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) and sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) took the top-two spots in the 1 Mile.  Channon finished first with a time of 4:12.16 and Quinn finished second with a time of 4:12.97.  The women’s squad also took the top-two positions in the women’s 1 Mile.  Junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) finished first with a time of 4:46.85, and freshmen Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) finished second with a time of 5:06.75.  Freshman Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) placed fourth with a time of 5:12.90.
In the 3000-meters, sophomore Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) finished first for the men’s squad with a time of 8:36.99 and senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) finished first for the women with a time of 9:55.00.
Also of note, freshman Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) finished second in the 800-meters with a time of 1:58.82, just .19 seconds behind Rhode Island junior Michael Cook, who finished first.
Providence will compete next on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26 at the Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass.
