Emily Sisson Leads the Friars At the BIG EAST Outdoor Track And Field Championships

Sisson claims first in the women’s 10000 meter run with a stadium best time.

Piscataway, N.J. - The Providence College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field team completed their first day of competition today, Saturday, May 4 at the BIG EAST Championships in Piscataway, N.J. at the Bauer Track and Field Complex. The Friars had one first place finish and two second place finishes between the men and the women.



On the women’s side, junior Emily Sission (Chesterfield, Mo.) took first in the 10000 meter run. Sisson finished the race in a time of 33:02.88. Her time was a stadium best, previously set by Providence College cross country and track star, Kim Smith ‘05 in 2004.



Also competing in the women’s 10000 meter run, was senior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and junior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.). Murphy placed 11th with a time of 35:46.28, while Roecker placed 13th with a time of 36:04.75. Both competitors posted ECAC Championship qualifying times.



Senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) claimed a second place finish in the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:16.07. Shleby’s time was one of three that broke the previous stadium best set in 2001.



Junior Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was the final competitor for the Friars today. McCarthy competed in the women’s 800 meter where she placed 13th with a time of 2:12.79.



On the men’s side, senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) earned a second place finish in the men’s 10000 meter run. Channon finished the race in an IC4A Championship qualifying time of 29:34.63. Classmate Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) also competed in the 10000 meter run, where he placed 22 in a time of 31:47.50.



Freshman Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) competed in the men’s 1500 meter run where he finished 20th in a time of 4:00.81. The final competitor for the men was junior Patrick Bowler (Westwood, Mass.). Bowler placed eighth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 56.50m.



The Friars will continue competition tomorrow, Sunday, May 5 at the BIG EAST Championships. The Friars will have competitors in the men’s and women’s 5000 meter run. Starting at 1:50 p.m., Providence will be competing in women’s 4x800 meter relay and then at 2:35 p.m. in the men’s 4x400 meter relay.



Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) will be running the 5000 meter run at 1:30 for the men, while junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) will compete for the women at 1:10 p.m.
