Providence College Women’s Cross Country Earns Second Win of the Season

The Friars claimed their second first place finish of the season.



STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Providence College women’s cross country team claimed the top-three spots today, Sept. 14 at the Stony Brook Invitational to earn a first place finish out of the four competing schools. The women finished with 26 points to earn the win.



Senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) crossed the finish line first at 17:44.67 just seconds before classmate Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), who finished the 5k race at 17:45.15, and sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), who was third with a time of 17:51.05. The trio claimed the top-three spots for the second time this season.



In her collegiate debut, freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) finished seventh in a time of 18:40.48. Senior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) was the last Friar to score with a 13th place finish in a time of 19:12.94.



Sophomores Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) earned 18th and 20th place finishes with times of 19:31.02 and 19:41.16, respectively.



Freshman Bryanna Allison (Lowell, Mass.), senior Elizabeth DeVivo (Riverside, Conn.) and junior Julie Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) finished at 19:52.18, 20:12.11 and 20:14.40, respectively. Allison finished in 23rd, while DeVivo and Solimine finished 29th and 30th.



Junior Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkhill, N.Y.) earned a 36th place finish with a time of 20:28.44, while sophomore Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) and senior Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished 38th and 39th with times of 20:33.42 and 20:41.90.



Senior Molly McCann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was the last Friar to cross the finish line with a time of 21:43.27 for a 51st place finish.



"It was a very good race for the women," Assistant Coach Kevin Myles shared on the win. "Our top-three girls ran very well to beat an All-American. It was a great start to Catarina Rocha’s college career as well."



Providence finished 16 points ahead of Columbia (42), who took second place, Stony Brook finished third with 79 points and Marist came in fourth with 93.



The Friars are back in action on Friday, Sept. 27, when the team will travel to Boston, Mass. to compete in the Boston College Invitational. The meet will be a good indicator for the team as they will face nationally ranked competitors such Oregon, who took the 2012 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Title.
