The BIG EAST Conference announces the winners of the 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference announced the winners of the 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards today (July 8, 2014) and Providence College men's basketball guard  Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) and cross country/track runner Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) were named winners for their respective sports.


The BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council gives the awards to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on their athletic accolades or performances, academic credentials and volunteer service to the community. Those student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher are eligible.


Cotton had another impressive season for the Friars, leading the team to its first BIG EAST title since 1994 and its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2004. He earned the team's MVP honor after leading the BIG EAST in assists with 6.1 assists per game during regular-season conference play. The senior also ranked second in the BIG EAST in scoring (21.8 ppg, 23.4 ppg BIG EAST play), and ranked ninth in the nation among all NCAA Division I players. He also led the nation in minutes played (39.9 mpg). He averaged 41.9 minutes per BIG EAST contest. He scored 20 or more points in 26 of the 35 games he played in this season, including a career-high 36 points versus North Carolina on March 21 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. In addition to earning Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America accolades, Cotton also was named BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player, First Team All-BIG EAST, Lute Olson All-American, NBC Sports.com Second Team All-American, NABC All-District 5 First Team, USBWA All-District 1 First Team, Rhode Island Division 1 Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Providence College Male Athlete of the Year.


Sisson earned All-America honors at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championship finishing seventh overall and first on the team. She led the Friars to a NCAA cross country title, the first since 1996 and second in program history. Sisson also won the BIG EAST cross country individual title and was the 2014 indoor 5,000 meter champion. She finished the indoor season earning First-Team All-America accolades in the 5,000 meters, which marks her seventh All-America honor as a Friar.


Along with her athletic achievements, Sisson was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team and was the BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2013-14 academic year.
