Providence Cross Country Ready For NCAA Cross Country Championships

The Friars race on Nov. 19.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19. The races will take place at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country course in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6k will start at 11:00 a.m. ET, followed by the men's 10k at 12:00 p.m. ET. The races will have both live updates and a live feed. The links can be found below.

Eight runners will be traveling for the Friars, with seven racing and the eighth acting as an alternate. The teams will be selected the day of the race. Traveling for the women will be Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.), Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.), Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.), Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.), and Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.).

The men are bringing Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.), Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland), Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland), Thomas O'Neill (Middletown, N.J.), Nicolas Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) and Michael O'Leary (Melville, N.Y.).

At last year's championships, the women finished fourth overall. This marked the women's third time finishing on the podium (top four at nationals) in the past four seasons. Six of the eight women traveling for the Friars have experience racing at the NCAA meet. Collins is a three time All-American in cross country (10th in 2012, 39th in 2013, 20th in 2015). Mullins has twice finished in the top 70, finishing 67th in 2015 and 62nd in 2016. Ilarda has improved each year she has competed (153rd in 2014, 114th in 2015) and looks to continue this trend in 2016. Lembo finished 70th in 2014 and 101st in 2015. Paladino, while racing for West Virginia, finished 210th in 2014 before making a massive improvement in 2015 by finishing 77th. Barry was a part of the Friars' national team in 2014 finishing in 194th. Both Hollowood and Wheeler look to make their debuts at nationals after strong campaigns this season.

The men return to the NCAA Championships after failing to qualify in 2015. The men last qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2014, when the team finished in 13th place overall. Graduate student Julian Oakley and senior Trevor Crawley were both a part of the 2014 team, finishing in 123rd and 173rd place, respectively.

The Friar men will be looking for graduate student Stephen Robertson and senior Hugh Armstrong to continue their strong seasons. Robertson and Armstrong have consistently been the second and third runners for the Friars all season with both earning All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Region honors.

Hanlon was the alternate at the 2014 national championships and looks to make an impact in his nationals debut after consistently being a part of the top five all season.

O'Neill, Carleo and O'Leary have all been a part of the top seven for the men at different points of the season. Carleo raced as part of the top seven at the Nuttycombe Invitational, BIG EAST Championships and at the Northeast Regional meet. O'Neill was a part of the top seven at the BIG EAST Championships and at the Northeast Regional meet. O'Leary traveled with the team for the Joe Piane Invitational. All three will look to race at Nationals.
