Women's Cross Country Captures BIG EAST Title, Men's Team Place Second
This is the Providence women’s eighth BIG EAST Team Title.
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The fourth-ranked Providence College women's cross country team scored 36 points and captured the 2016 BIG EAST Cross Country title at Van Cortlandt Park in New York today (Oct. 28). The Providence men's team placed second behind Georgetown.
For the women, it was the squad's second consecutive BIG EAST title and eighth all-time. Conditions for the race were cold and windy which led to the lead pack of women being tightly packed. Graduate student Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) notched down the pace and broke the race open about halfway through the race. At this point in the race, Providence trailed Villanova, 39 to 43. The women moved through the field in the second half of the race and placed four runners in the top eight and to claim the team title. Junior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) led the charge by finishing third with a time of 21:01.1 followed by Collins who finished in fourth place (21:10.2). Providence had four runners finish among the top eight competitors. Junior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) finished sixth (21:12.8) and freshman Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) took eighth (21:21.4). Graduate student Laruen Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring by taking the 15th spot (21:53.7). Ilarda, Collins, Paladino, Wheeler, Mullins and junior Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.), who finished in 16th place (21:56.0), all earned All-BIG EAST honors for their top 20 placements.
Coach Ray Treacy was pleased with the results. “I’m very happy that we were able to pull out the win today, even while resting Katie Lembo,” said Treacy. “To have six of our athletes make the All BIG-EAST team is a good showing of the strength of the team.”
The conditions forced the men to race in a similar style race to the women. The men remained in a tight pack until about 5,000 meters into the race. At this point a small pack separated themselves from the field. Graduate student Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) inserted himself into this lead pack and senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) took leadership of the first chase pack. Graduate student Stephen Robertson, senior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) were all fighting for position in the third group. Oakley ended up finishing in fourth place with a time of 24:37.6 to lead the Friars. Armstrong finished in eighth place (24:55.9) while Robertson moved up to claim a hard fought 13th place (25:12.0). Crawley finished in 19th place (25:25.2) and Hanlon finished in 21st (25:25.9) to round out the scoring for Providence. Freshman Nicolas Carleo and junior Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) raced well in the final stages of the race to finish in 22nd (25:29.7) and 23rd (25:32.7), respectively. The team ended up finishing in second place behind Georgetown (33 points) with 65 points. Oakley, Armstrong, Robertson and Crawley’s top 20 finishes earned them All-BIG EAST honors.
“We reached our goal of finishing in the top two at the BIG EAST Championships behind the strong performances by our seniors,” Treacy said about the men’s performance. “This race sets us up nicely for the (Northeast) regional meet as we have had constant improvement by our entire top seven.”
The Friars return to action at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet on Nov. 11 where the teams look to punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships. The meet will be held at Van Cortlandt Park.
