Providence College Cross Country Competes At Beantown Invitational
The women's team finished first and the men's team finished second.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Beantown Invitational at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Sept. 16. The women's team won while the men's team finished second.

The Friar women dominated from start to finish. Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) immediately went to the front and created a lead pack along with a runner from UNH and Boston College. Collins ran a strong race and finished in third with a time of 17:19. Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), Amelia Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.), Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) formed a chase pack and separated themselves from the rest of the field. Ilarda, Paladino, Wheeler and Lembo took the four through seven spots, with times of 17:24, 17:24, 17:25 and 17:26, respectively. Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) ran 17:54 to finish in 13th place while Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) ran 18:09 to finish 20th to round out the scoring. The Friars finished with a final score of 25 points to outdistance Dartmouth (79 points) and Brown (103 points).

The men's race did not separate as quickly as the women's did. The front pack remained tight and made up of mostly Providence men until the pace quickened right before the 5k mark. Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) ran a strong second half to finish second overall with a time of 24:25. Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) were not far behind finishing in sixth and seventh place with times of 24:35 and 24:39 respectively. Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.) and Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) rounded out the top five finishing 17th and 18th, respectively. Sophomores Marcus Karamanolious (Wellington, New Zealand) and Michael O'Leary (Melville, N.Y.) were the sixth and seventh men for the Friars finishing in 21st and 29th place, respectively. In the end, the Friar men finished second overall with 50 points, losing to Dartmouth (40 points), but beating No. 5 Arkansas (61 points).

The Friars' next race will be the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 30 in South Bend, Ind.
