Providence Track Travels To Villanova For BIG EAST Championships

The Friars will compete on May 12-13 in Villanova, Pa.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Villanova University for the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 12 and 13. The Championships will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The stream can be accessed via the FoxSportsGo app on a mobile device or tablet. FRIAR WOMEN TO LOOK FOR:

The women’s strength lies in the distance races. Junior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) enters the meet as the top seed in the women’s 1,500 meters. This season, Paladino raced to a second place finish at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 4:14.76. Paladino won the mile at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and earned All-America honors after finishing seventh in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.



In the 5,000 meters, the Friars will look to senior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.). Rocha is the defending champion in the event and has a personal best time of 16:03.44 in the event. Wheeler enters the meet after running a personal best time of 16:10.70 at the Stanford Invitational. At the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, Wheeler finished sixth in the 3,000 meters and was a member of the Distance Medley relay team that finished second.



Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) looks to defend her title in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. This season, Ilarda ranks first in BIG EAST in the both the 3,000-meter Steeplechase (9:57.22) and the 5,000 meters (15:46.90). Ilarda’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase time ranks fourth in the nation while her 5,000 meter time ranks ninth. Ilarda finished second in both the 3,000 meters and Distance Medley Relay at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and earned All-America honors by finishing seventh in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) looks to be a factor as well after finishing fourth at last year’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.



Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) will be racing in the 10,000 meters. Lembo finished second in the 10,000 meters at last year’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.

Relays – The Relay teams will be selected from the athletes above as well as Angelica Kartsounis, Elizabeth Mazzucca and Mariah O’Gara.



2016 BIG EAST RECAP:

At last year’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, the Women’s track team finished in sixth-place with 48 points. Both Brianna Ilarda (3,000-meter Steeplechase) and Catarina Rocha (5,000 meters) captured individual titles for the Friars. Katie Lembo also earned a podium finish in the 10,000 meters by finishing second.



FRIAR MEN TO LOOK FOR:

The men’s team also will look to its distance runners. Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) enters the meet as the top seed in the 1,500 meters. This season, Oakley has run 3:43.03 for the 1,500 meters as well as 13:55.45 in the 5,000 meters. Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) also looks to be a contender after running a time of 4:04.54 for the mile.  Oakley and Carleo finished sixth and seventh in the event at the 2016 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.



Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) and Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, Maine) look to be the top Friars in the 5,000 meters. Armstrong enters the meet ranked second with a time of 14:18.63. During the Indoor season, Armstrong ran a personal best time of 14:06.43. Crawley has a personal best time of 14:09.06 in the event.



The Friars have three of the top four seeds in the 10,000 meters with Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.), Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.).

2016 BIG EAST RECAP:

Last year at the BIG EAST Championships, the men’s team captured a seventh-place finish (48 points). Jordan Mann (3,000-meter Steeplechase), Trevor Crawley (10,000 meters) and the 4x800 meter relay team all finished in third place for the Friars. Hugh Armstrong also had a strong performance, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters.
