Paladino Qualifies For 1,500 Meter Final At NCAA First Round

Paladino ran the second fastest time in the first round.



LEXINGTON, KY. – The Providence College track and field teams competed in the opening day of the First Round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, May 25. The Friars had athletes compete in both the men’s and women’s 1,500 meters as well as the men’s 10,000 meters.



Junior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) raced in the third heat of the 1,500 meters. Paladino immediately tucked in towards the front of the pack and passed through one lap in fifth place. As the race progressed, she slowly moved through the field, picking up a place a lap. Paladino ran the fastest final 400 meters (68.45) in the race to finish second and secure a spot in the finals on Saturday, May 27. Paladino’s time of 4:17.70 was the second fastest time on the day for the women.



Sophomore Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) competed in the fourth and final heat of the men’s 1,500 meters. The pace was slow through the halfway point in the race, with all of the athletes waiting for a move to be made. Carleo would close the final 800 meters in 1:56 and the final lap in a 55 to finished ninth in his heat with an overall time of 3:52.32.



Senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) ran in the final race of the day, the men’s 10,000 meters. The race was tactical in the opening half, as the field passed through 5,000 meters in 15:37. The leaders then began to drop the pace and broke the field apart. Armstrong fought hard over the final half to finish 41st.



The lone Friar competing on Friday, May 26 is junior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Ilarda looks to qualify for the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top three in her heat. The women’s Steeplechase is set to begin at 8:20 p.m.
