Former Friars Ben Connor and Hugh Armstrong Qualify For European Cross Country Championships

The two will race in the Senior Men’s race in Samorin, Slovakia on December 10th.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former Friars Ben Connor ’15 and Hugh Armstrong ’17 both qualified for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships after stellar performances over the past weekend (Nov. 25-26).

Ben Connor ran one of the best races of his career on Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Liverpool Cross Challenge. The race has acted as the British trials for the European cross country championships for the past 15 years. Connor broke away from the field over the final 2,000 meters of the race to claim his first senior men’s title with a time of 30:18.

Hugh Armstrong raced at the Irish Life Health cross country championships in Abbotsown, Ireland on Sunday, Nov. 26. Armstrong ran an impressive second half of the 10,000-meter race to finish third and claim the bronze medal at the Irish championships with a time of 31:50. Armstrong automatically qualified for the Irish national team with his third place finish.

Both Connor and Armstrong will now travel to Samorin, Slovakia for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships. The race will take place on Sunday, Dec. 10. Connor finished 16th at last year’s European championships to help Great Britain win the senior men’s team race. This will be Armstrong’s first time competing in the senior men’s race at the European championships. Armstrong did, however, race at the U23 European cross country championships in 2015.
