Providence Track Travels To NCAA Outdoor Track Championships

Sophomore Abbey Wheeler will race in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, June 9.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence Track & Field team traveled to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday, June 6. Sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) will race in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, June 9 at 8:25 p.m. ET.



STREAMING INFORMATION:

The NCAA Championships is being held at Hayward Field and is being hosted by the University of Oregon. The format of the championships has the men and the women competing on alternate days with the men racing on Wednesday and Friday, and the women racing on Thursday and Saturday. The championships will be streamed on ESPN on all days. Streaming information for each day of competition below.

MEET NOTES:

Wheeler earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after finishing fourth in her heat of the 5,000 meters at the First Round of the Championships on May, 26. She is the 14th woman in Friar history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 5,000 meters and the first since Emily Sisson ’15 in 2015.



The 2017-18 year has been a breakout one for Wheeler. During the cross country season, she earned All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Regional honors. Indoors, Wheeler set a personal best of 9:18.86 in the 3,000 meters, finished second in the 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championships and won the ECAC title in the 3,000 meters. Prior to qualifying for NCAA Championships outdoors, Wheeler set a personal best of 15:57.18 in the 5,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays and finished third in the same event at the BIG EAST Championships.
