The Friars will compete on May 11-12 in Geneva, Ohio.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to the Spire Institute for the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 11 and 12. The Championships will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The stream can be accessed via the FoxSportsGo app on a mobile device or tablet. FRIAR WOMEN TO LOOK FOR:
The women’s strength lies in the distance races. Graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) will be looking to add the 10,000-meter title to her resume. In her career, Rocha has won the 2017 cross country individual title and the 2018 indoor 5,000-meter title and the 2016 outdoor 5,000-meter title. Rocha has set personal bests in both the 5,000 meters (15:55.86) and 3,000 meters (9:17.60). While she has not run the 10,000 meters this season, Rocha enters the meet with a personal best time of 33:40.30 in the event. Senior Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) will also be racing in the 10,000 meters.

Sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) looks to continue her strong running in the 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championships. Wheeler has set personal bests in both the 3,000 meters (9:18.86) and the 5,000 meters (15:57.18) this season. She enters the meet with the second fastest seed time. Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) is also racing the 5,000 meters and has a personal best of 16:44.40 in the event.

2017 BIG EAST RECAP:
At last year’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, the women’s track team tied for sixth-place with 44 points. Brianna Ilarda won her second BIG EAST 3,000-meter Steeplechase title in a row and broke Friar alumni Rosin McGettigan’s meet record in the event in the process. Catarina Rocha finished third in the 5,000 meters

FRIAR MEN TO LOOK FOR:
The men’s team also will look to its distance runners. The Friars have five athletes racing in the 1,500 meters.  Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) is the top Friar in the event as he enters the meet with a personal best of 3:45.20. Michael O’Leary (St. James, N.Y.) has also had a good season as she has run 3:47.78. Thomas Arbeiter (Ellington, Conn.), Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and McGrath Bissaillon (Merrimac, Mass.) are also entered in the meet.

Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) will be the two Friars racing in the men’s 800 meters. Jendzejec set a personal best of 1:52.17 at the Ocean State Invitational. Carleo has run 1:53.31 this season but has a personal best of 1:52.11 from the indoor season. Salvatore Flight (Riverside, Ill.) will also be racing in the 800 meters.

Chris Shanahan (Westwood, Mass.) enters the meet as the top ranked javelin thrower in the BIG EAST. Shanahan set the school record of 60.36m at the Providence vs. Brown dual meet this season.

Liam Harris (Douglas, County Cork, Ireland) is entered to race in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters. Harris has the third fastest time in the conference in the steeplechase with his 9:10.87 from the Ocean State Invitational. He also has the fifth fastest 5,000-meter time in the BIG EAST with his 14:18.17 from Penn Relays. Also entered in the 5,000-meters is David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and Kevin Quinn (Needham, Mass.).

2016 BIG EAST RECAP:
Last year at the BIG EAST Championships, the men’s team captured a seventh-place finish (44 points). Stephen Robertson captured the men’s 10,000-meter title. Julian Oakley finished third in the 1,500 meters.
