<span style=""> </span>College Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams will run in the 2012 BIG EAST Championships this Saturday, February 18, and Sunday, February 19 at the famed

New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York, N.Y. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">The Friars have set themselves up well heading into the conference meet, having already turned in several strong outings this season. Confidence and
expectations are high. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">“We’ve had some really good individual performances during the season, and we are looking for some of those people to come out and win conference championships this weekend,” explained Director of Cross Country and Track Operations Ray

<p class="MsoNormal">As is their custom, the Friars head to New York strong in the distance events, including the Distance Medley Relay and the individual events ranging from the 1000-meters and up.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">On the men’s side, one spotlight will be on senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland). Three years ago, at the same Armory Track, McCarthy earned two BIG EAST titles. He outkicked the competition to take the 3000-meter crown in 8:07.06.
He also led the Distance Medley Relay to victory with a 3:58.8 mile run. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal">McCarthy has tuned up for the same workload this year with multiple, early season achievements, including a blazing mile run of 3:55.75 that broke the Providence College and New England collegiate record.

<p class="MsoNormal">“He’s in terrific shape, haven gotten a great training base in over Christmas time,” lauded the coach. “The results are coming about because of his fitness level and the fact he’s enjoying what he’s doing as well. There’s a lot more to
achieve for the rest of the season after this weekend, but he’s also focused on how we do this weekend as a team, as well, and that’s very important.”</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Another student-athlete to watch is senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand), a Second Team All-American last winter, in the 1000.

<p class="MsoNormal">On the women’s side, Providence will feature several contenders, including sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) in the mile, classmate Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) in the 5000 and senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.),
a second-team All-American last indoor season, running the 3K. The Friar women also have high aspirations in the DMR.

<p class="MsoNormal">“We’re in a pretty good spot. This weekend is important for us in terms of performances and scoring points for the team,” said Treacy. “It’s not about times this weekend, it’s about placement, getting to finals, and then we’ll evaluate
after the meet is over as to what we’re doing the rest of the season.”</p>
