PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES 9th AT THE
NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP; FRIAR MEN PLACE 22nd
Shelby Greany and Lee Carey each earn All-America honors for their individual finishes.
TERRE HAUTE, IND.-- The Providence College women's and men's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on November 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. The event was held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
The Providence women's team finished ninth of 31 teams (343 points), while the men's team placed 22nd of 31 teams (510 points). Sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) paced the Friars women's team with a 12th-place finish and earned All-America honors in cross country for the first time in her career. Greany crossed the finish line of the 6K course in 20:27.2. A year ago, Greany captured All-America recognition during the outdoor track season with a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Villanova's Sheila Reid won the individual title with a time of 20:06.9. She led Villanova to the team title as well, compiling just 120 points.
On the men's side, junior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) led the Friar effort with a 24th-place finish in a time of 30:19.9. He earned All-America honors for the first time in his career at Providence. Samuel Chelanga of Liberty won the individual title with a time of 29:22.2. Oklahoma State took home the NCAA team title with 73 points.
For the Providence College women's cross country team, it marks the 17th time in program history that they have finished among the top-10 at the NCAA Championships. The Friars' ninth-place finish this year marks the best finish for the program since 2006. A year ago, the squad placed 11th.
Joining Greany in the scoring column was junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.), who placed 51st with a time of 21:002. Junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), a 2009 All-American in cross country, placed 103rd in a time of 21:21.1. Junior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) and senior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) rounded out the list of Providence runners who scored. O'Carroll placed 115th (21:28.4), while Perron finished 170th (21:56.2).
On the men's side, junior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand), sophomore Eric Malnati (Walpole, Mass.) and junior Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.) all joined Carey in the scoring column for Providence. Channon finished the 10K course in a time of 30:39.2 for 55th place. Matthews finished 130th (31:27.2), while Malnati and Terry placed 174th (31:54.0) and 229th (32:57.1), respectively.
Both squads will return home to Providence, R.I. for a brief rest before kicking off the 2010-11 indoor track season on December 3 at the Fordham Invitational.
