Providence College Men’s Cross Country Receives At-Large Bid to NCAA Championships
Friars advance to nationals for 16th time in the last 17 years.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s cross country team has received an at-large bid from the NCAA Division I Track and Field committee and will run in the 2011 NCAA Championships. The race will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011 at the Laverne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The achievement continues a tremendous trend of success for the Friars’ program, as the team has now advanced to the sports’ biggest collegiate stage in 16 of the last 17 seasons.

Providence bolstered its NCAA resume on Saturday, placing fourth at the NCAA Northeast Regionals in Amherst, N.Y. David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) continued his strong senior campaign by earning second overall, out of a field of 240 runners. McCarthy completed the 10-kilometer course in 31:13.1. Iona’s Leonard Korir crossed just 2.7 seconds ahead at 31:10.4. It is the second time McCarthy has placed second at the Northeast Regionals, having accomplished the feat in the fall of 2008.

Also achieving a top-10 finish was classmate Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), who placed eighth. Channon’s time was 31:32.7. Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) then completed his first NCAA Regional meet in 17th-place with a time of 31:47.8. A pair of juniors rounded out the PC scoring, with Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass) claiming 39th in 32:26.2, and Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) in 42nd with a 32:33.5

Also helping the Friars’ case was last month’s Wisconsin adidas Invitational. Providence earned ninth place out of a crowded field that included 39 teams – 20 of which were nationally-ranked.
