Providence College Cross Country teams earn top five performances at NCAA Regionals.

McCarthy second overall to pace men; Ffrench O’Carroll, Nagel and Davidson all land in top twelve.

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams made their cases for at-large bids into the national championships, Saturday, placing fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Northeast Regionals in Amherst, N.Y.

 The 30th-ranked Friar men were led by a second-place overall effort from senior David McCarthy ( Waterford, Ireland), while the fifth-ranked PC women placed three in the field’s top 12.

Decisions about at-large bids will be announced Sunday night. The NCAA Championships will be run on Monday, November 21, in Terre Haute, Indiana.

McCarthy continued his strong campaign by completing the 10-kilometer endeavor in 31:13.1, second only to the overall winner. Iona’s Leonard Korir crossed just 2.7 seconds ahead at 31:10.4. It is the second time McCarthy has placed second at the Northeast Regionals, having accomplished the feat in the fall of 2008.

Also achieving a top-ten finish was classmate Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), who placed eighth overall out of the 240 runners. Channon’s time was 31:32.7

Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) then completed his first NCAA Regional meet with a 17th-place time of 31:47.8.

A pair of juniors rounded out the PC scoring, with Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass) claiming 39th in 32:26.2, and Eric Malnati in 42nd with a 32:33.5

The quintet combined for a score of 108 points. Syracuse took the team title with 54 points.

If the Friar men earn the at-large bid, it will be their 15th visit to nationals in the last 16 years.

As for the women’s side, senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) led the way with the best regional performance of her career. The steady senior placed seventh out of a field of 243 harriers. Her time in the 6K was 20:57.2, just 31.9 seconds behind the overall winner, Dartmouth’s Abby D’Agostino (20:25.3).

Also securing top twelve performances were sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), who placed ninth with a time of 21:03.4, and senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who grabbed 12th with a 21:05.8.

Junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) was 58th with a clocking of 22:12.0. Senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring in 77th at 22:31.3.

The Friars scored 163 points. Syracuse took the women’s race as well with 116.

With an at-large bid, the Friars will have qualified for a remarkable 23 consecutive NCAA Championships.
