Providence Women’s Track and Field Team Stays Sharp at Valentine Invitational
Nagel leads Friars with personal-best 3000.

BOSTON, MASS. – The Providence College women’s track and field team continued its strong indoor season Friday evening at Boston University’s Valentine Invitational.

The Friar men will compete at the same event later today.

As is its custom, Providence was again noteworthy in the 3000-meters. Sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and junior Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) all eclipsed the BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying standards when they crossed the tape.

Nagel surpassed her own personal best in the event with a time of 9:24.30, good for sixth overall in a crowded field of 87 competitors. Davidson, a Second-Team All American last indoor season, was one place behind with a clocking of 9:29.46, while Roecker crossed in 9:57.84.

In the 1000-meters, Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) continued her strong winter campaign with a time of 2:55.93. The finish also qualifies the sophomore for both the conference championship and the ECAC’s.

The mile contingent was led by Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.). The senior bested the BIG EAST standard with a time of 5:03.66. And for the second week in a row freshman Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) ran a BIG EAST worthy time in the 800-meters, this time finishing in 2:16.84. Sophomore Laura Isabelle (Troy, N.Y.) timed in shortly after with a 2:18.02, breaking her best time as a collegian.

There was another memorable moment for the Providence faithful, courtesy the 5000-meters. Former Friar Katie DiCamillo ‘09, now running for New Balance, bested the field of 55 entrants with a blazing 16:01.71. The time was nearly eight seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

The current edition of the Friar women’s team will return to action on February 18 at the BIG EAST Championships. The meet will be run this year at the famed Armory in New York.
