NEW YORK, N.Y. – Providence College senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) has placed eighth in the Wanamaker Mile at the 2012 Millrose games. The Games are being held this weekend at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City.

McCarthy crossed the line in 3:57.86, just 3.92 seconds shy of the event winner, Matthew Centrowitz, a professional who runs for Nike. Centrowitz’ time of 3:53.92 broke the Armory record of 3:54.98 set by former Friar great Mark Carroll ’95 eleven years ago.

McCarthy was the fifth collegiate runner to finish.

The Millrose Games are one of the most respected track and field competitions in the world. Athletes must be invited to the event, which originated in 1908. The centerpiece of the Games is the Wanamaker Mile, perhaps the most prestigious mile run in the sport of track and field.

McCarthy is the first Friar to take part in the Wanamaker while still a student-athlete on Smith Hill.

It is the latest accomplishment in what has been a remarkable indoor season for the All-American. On January 22, he cruised to victory in the 3000-meters at the GBTC Invitational at Harvard. His time of 7:56.76 was the fastest in the nation at the time. The next week, at Boston University’s Terrier Invitational, McCarthy broke the New England Collegiate and the Providence College records with a blazing 3:55.75 in the mile run. Again, his clocking was the best in the nation.
