McCarthy Wins 3000-meter BIG EAST Championship.

Providence College Track stand-out blazes to second title of weekend; Friars earn eight top-five finishes at conference meet.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Providence College distance runner David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) has won the 3000-meter event at the 2012 BIG EAST Championships, held this weekend at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory.

McCarthy's heroics capped off a tremendous weekend for the Friars, who earned eight, top-five finishes in the distance events, including victory in the men's Distance Medley Relay on Saturday.

McCarthy's 3000-meters was brilliant, as he crossed the line in 7:57.5 - over two seconds faster than the next closest competitor. The time breaks the BIG EAST Championship record of 8:01.56, set in 1995 by former Friar great Mark Carroll '95.

The win was the senior's second crown of the weekend, as he anchored the Friars' DMR to first place with a feverish mile split of 3:56.3. It is the second time McCarthy has pulled off the double-victory, winning the same events in 2009.

This season, it was Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), sophomore Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) and senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) who made up the rest of the victorious relay quartet.

Matthews and Quinn were equally busy Sunday. Matthews earned third-place in the 1000-meters with a clocking of 2:30.11, less than .15 of a second shy of the event winner, UConn's Tim Bennatan (2:29.96). The effort earns the Friar senior his second All-BIG EAST honor in the last two indoor campaigns.

Meanwhile Quinn earned fourth-place in his BIG EAST winter debut, trailing McCarthy in the 3K with an 8:05.22. The time qualifies Quinn for another post-season race, the IC4A's.

Also of note on the men's side was the performance of senior Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) The miler earned 10th overall with a time of 4:13.28.

After claiming two top-five finishes Saturday, the PC women followed with a pair on Sunday. Senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned fourth-place in the 3000-meters with a posting of 9:43.19, just 3.8 seconds behind the winner, Georgetown's Emily Infeld (9:39.39). Davidson's mark earned a place in the ECAC Championships.

Meanwhile, Providence sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) was fifth in the mile, checking in at an ECAC-worthy 4:49.52. Classmate Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) was 12th in the same event with a4:57.38.

Saturday, sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) was second in the 5000, and the DMR placed fifth.

For the team scoring, the PC men placed ninth out of 13 programs with 33 points. Notre Dame won the overall title with 131. THe Friar women were 12th out of 15 teams with 22 points. Georgetown captured that overall victory with 102.

Up next for the Friars is the New England Championships, February 24 and 25, in Boston.
