Providence College Track and Field Teams Excel at New England Championships

Davidson wins mile; Friars claim nine, top-five finishes.

BOSTON, MASS. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their series of post season challenges this weekend, earning nine, top-five finishes at the New England Championships at Boston University despite holding much their rosters idle.

Senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), a second-team All-American last winter, was victorious in her first mile-run this season. Davidson crossed the line in 4:50.3, nine-tenths of a second ahead of the next closest competitor, New Hampshire’s Keeley Maguire (4:50.9).

The Friar women also impacted the 3000-meters, placing three runners in the top-four. Senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) was second with a time of 9:31.52, less than two seconds shy of her personal best. Classmate Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) was third with a posting of 9:50.52, just ahead of the fourth-place effort of junior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.), who timed in at 9:57.71.

The Friars continue to score in the middle-distances, as well. Freshman Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) continued her strong debut campaign with a time of 2:15.88 in the 800, good for fourth overall. Sophomore Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was fifth in the 1000-meters, earning a time of 2:56.16.

On the men’s side, the Friars earned a pair of top-five finishes in the 5000-meters as two student-athletes shattered their personal bests. Junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) earned fourth overall with an effort of 14:39.44. His previous PR of 14:49.31 was set at last season’s New England Championships. Classmate Eric Malnatti (Walpole, N.H.) trailed by a half-step, crossing in 14:39.87, over 33 seconds faster than his previous best entering this season of 15:13.06.

Freshman Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) earned the other top-five finish, grabbing fifth in the 3000-meters with an 8:23.76.

The Friars will now take on a busy start to the month of March, as several athletes will compete in the ultra-fast events of the Columbia Last Chance Meet, held March 2nd and 3rd at the Armory in New York City. Other competitors will take part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships at B.U on March 3 and 4.
