Providence College Student-Athlete Julian Matthews Earns BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award

Track and Field stalwart recognized for academic and athletic achievement.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College student-athlete Julian Matthews ’12 (Nelson, New Zealand), has been recognized with a BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Excellence Award.

The honor is given to a competitor in each of the conference’s 24 sports, with Matthews representing men’s outdoor track. According to the conference, the award winners are recognized “based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.” Winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Council.

It is the latest honor in what has been a remarkable year for Matthews. In January, he was name an American Eagle Outfitters Scholar Athlete for his work in the classroom. On the track, he took first place in the New Zealand Nationals.
