Providence College Track and Field Ignites Outdoor Campaign
Friars excel at Raleigh Relays.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams kicked off the 2012 outdoor season in fine fashion, turning in several performances at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina that will lead to postseason berths.

On the women’s side, junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) shined in her first track meet of the school year, placing second and surpassing the previous meet record in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a clocking of 10:18.7. The old record was 10:18.81.

Also challenging in the steeplechase was senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who earned fourth with a time of 10:23.86. Both Friar times would have qualified for the first round of the NCAA’s a year ago, and thus set up well for the competition to get into this year’s field.

Also making her bid for the NCAA first round was Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland). The senior continued her strong campaign in the 5000-meters. O’Carroll crossed in 16:11.23. Teammate Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) finished the same event in 17:22.93.

With their efforts, Greany, Davidson, O’Carroll and Roecker all qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.

On the men’s side, the highlight was the 5000-meters, as senior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) and freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) put themselves into immediate contention for the NCAA first round. Carey placed third overall with a 14:08.68, just under two seconds faster than Quinn (14:10.66).

The duo was joined in BIG EAST qualifying by senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand; 14:22.19) and freshman Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.; 14:37.72). All four men shattered the conference standard of 14:47.14.

In the 1500-meters, junior Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) hammered through in a BIG EAST worthy 3:50.63. And in the 10,000-meters, classmates Eric Malnatti (Walpole, N.H.) and Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) made their bids for the BIG EAST meet with times of 30:41.6 and 31:12.49, respectively

The Friars return to action at the Stony Brook Quad meet in Stony Brook, New York, this Wednesday, April 4.
