Matthews Wins at New Zealand Olympic Trials
Friar senior edges former teammate McLaren in 1500-meters.

WAITAKERE, NEW ZEALAND – Providence College distance standout Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) has won the 1500-meters at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships. The meet is serving as the nation's Olympic Trials.

The senior crossed the finish line in 3:54.37 after a tactical race, outkicking former Friar Hayden McLaren ’09 (Christchurch, New Zealand) who was second in 3:55.03.

Matthews will still have to better the Olympic standard in the event of 3:35.5 to earn a berth on the New Zealand Olympic team at the London Summer Games. He will take aim at that mark during this Friars' upcoming outdoor track season.

Providence begins the campaign on March 30 at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
