Sisson wins 5000-meters at BIG EAST Championships
Distance standout blazes to new meet record, claims second Friar
 victory in as many days.

TAMPA, FLORIDA – Providence College sophomore Emily (Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) has won the 5000-meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Her time of 15:45.83 sets a new BIG EAST Championship record by three-hundredths of a second.  The old mark of 15:45.86, set by Georgetown’s Suzanne Girard, had stood since 1984.
It is Sisson’s first BIG EAST title and the second Friar win of the championship weekend. Junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) was victorious in Friday night’s 3000-meter steeplechase.
Sisson dominated Saturday’s race, outrunning the next closest competitor by 27.54 seconds. Providence also secured another top-five finish in the person of senior Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll (Dublin, Ireland), who placed fifth with a time of 16:36.13. Classmate Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) earned a point with an eighth place time of 16:44.43.
On the men’s side, senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) continues his strong campaign with a fifth place in the 5000. Channon crossed in 14:28.16, bettering the existing track record at the USF Track Stadium. Classmate Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) was just behind in sixth place with a 14:29.20.
Two Friars advanced to Sunday’s finals of the 1500-meters. Junior Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) was second in his heat with a clocking of 3:51.61. Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) was second in his respective prelim with a 3:52.06.
