Providence College Women’s Cross Country Wins NCAA Regional Championship

Men’s team places fifth.

MADISON, CONN. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships today (Nov. 9) at Hammonassett State Park in Madison, Conn.  The No. 28 Friar women were victorious at the championship, outrunning 37 other teams.  With the victory, the team automatically qualify for the NCAA National Championship that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Louisville, K.Y. The men’s team placed fifth and are waiting to hear if they will have any individual qualifiers for the national championship.

Four-out-of-five of the Friars’ top finishers placed in the top-10 in the field of 253 runners.  Freshman Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) finished second overall in a time of 19:55.3, behind the race-winner from Dartmouth, Abbey D’Agostino.  Shortly after, junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) crossed the finish-line.  Nagel, who finished sixth at last year’s event, finished fourth this year with a time of 20:00.08.  Sisson finished her first race of the season, contributing to the team’s low score with a sixth place finish (20:01.7).  Greany finished eighth (20:13.3), which was an improvement of 13 places from the race last year.  Rounding out the scoring for Providence was junior Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) who finished 26th in a time of 20:43.5.

The team finished with 46 points, which was 21 points ahead of Connecticut who finished second, and 72 points ahead of Cornell who finished third.

The men’s team finished fifth out of 34 teams led by sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland).  Quinn finished the 10K course third with a time of 30:18.9.  Freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) ran his best race of the season, finishing 16th in a time of 30:36.4.  Senior Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand), junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) and senior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) rounded out the scoring finishing 38th, 41st and 56th, respectively.  The team finished with 154 points.

Iona won on the men’s side with 45 points.  Iona senior Mitch Goose also was the individual winner, finishing with a time of 30.04.5.
