Providence College Cross Country Set to Compete at NCAA National Championships



The women’s team will compete on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s cross country team and sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) from the men’s cross country team will compete at the NCAA Division I National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.



The women’s 6K race is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m., while the men’s 10K race will start at 1:15 p.m.



After winning the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship last Friday, Nov. 9, the Friar women  jumped back up in the USTFCCCA Coaches’ Poll.  Providence is ranked eighth nationally heading to Louisville after moving up 12 spots from their ranking in week six.



Attending the championship will be eight Friars, including the top-five runners from the regional championship’s winning squad.  At the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship, four Friars finished in the top-10.  Providence was led again by freshman Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) who has consistently posted impressive times this season.  Collins placed second at both the BIG EAST Championship on Oct. 26, and the Northeast Regional Championship.  Following Collins was junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand).  Nagel finished in the Friar’s top-five in every meet she competed in this season.  Junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) also placed in the top-10 at regionals, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.  It was Sisson’s first time placing for the Friars this season.  Greany has placed in the Friar’s top-five regularly this season.  Collins, Nagel, Sisson and Greany all received All-Regional honors for their top-25 finishes.  Junior Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) was the Friar’s fifth finisher at regionals, placing 26th.



The three other Friars attending the championship meet are senior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.), junior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) and freshman Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.).



Providence women’s cross country heads to nationals for the first time since the 2010 season.  In 2010, the team finished ninth.  The team’s best performance was its first place finish in 1995 in Ames, Iowa.  Marie McMahon, Maria McCambridge, Krissy Haache, Gladys Ganiel, Susan Murnane, Moira Harrinton, Sarah Dupre and Meghan McCarthy were the eight members of the championship team.  The squad scored 88 points, led by McMahon who finished fourth and was the team's top finisher.  The team still stands as the only Friar squad to ever capture a NCAA team title.



Quinn will be competing as an individual racer in the men’s 10K, which starts at 1:15 p.m.  Quinn has been an integral member of the team all season, finishing in the top-three at almost every race he has competed.  Last week, he finished third overall at regionals to qualify for the championship.
