Providence College Cross Country Competes at Paul Short Invitational

No. 7 Friar women place sixth, while Friar men place fifth in field of 37 teams.



BETHLEHEM, Pa.  - The seventh-ranked Providence College women's cross country team placed sixth in the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday, September 28.  Providence freshman Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) was the team’s top finisher (3rd; 20:23).  Meanwhile, the Providence men’s team placed fifth out of 37 teams finishing with 194 points.



Seniors Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.), and juniors Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) and Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) all were in the Friars’ top-five this year.



The Friars had two top-10 finishers in the field of 360 runners.  Collins led the Friars with a third place finish and a time of 20:23, and Nagel placed seventh (20:33).



Greany placed 36th for the Friars, finishing with a time of 21:09, while Thek finished 52nd (21:24). Roecker rounded out the scoring for PC, checking in at 21:46 and placing 69th overall.



The women accounted for 167 points.  Cornell University was victorious on the day with 55 points.



On the men's side, the Friars were paced by sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), who finished the 8K course in eighth place out of the massive field of 332 harriers. Quinn has led the squad in the Friars’ two previous meets this season and crossed the finish line with a time of 24:22.  He was only 26 seconds behind the overall winner, Mark Dennin of Georgetown University.


Sophomore Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) turned in his second top-five team finish, claiming 35th place in 24:48. Senior Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand) was 45th in the team scoring and 46th overall, clocking in at 24:54.
Freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) scored in 49th place (24:57) and junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) rounded out the scoring in 57th (25:01).
The Friars accounted for 194 points. No. 22 Villanova University earned three of the top-10 places to claim the team victory with 69 points.
