Providence College Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Open

The Friars look to build off their second-place finish at last years NCAA
Cross Country Championships.

*Providence, R.I.* - The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country
teams will kick-off the 2013 season at the New Hampshire Dual Meet on
Saturday, Aug. 31 at 11:00 a.m. The meet will take place in Durham, N.H. at
the University of New Hampshire.

The women return after a second-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country
Championships last season. On Tuesday, Aug. 27 the women’s team was ranked
first in the nation by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association (USTFCCCA) in the preseason coaches’ poll. It was the first
time the team had been ranked number one since the 1996 season, the year
after the team took the 1995 national title.

The women’s team will return three of the top five runners from last season
and welcome five freshman. The regional poll, released on Aug. 26 by the
USTFCCCA, ranked the women first in the northeast. The women return seniors
Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), and
sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), all of whom earned
All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Joining the Friars are
freshmen Bryanna Allison (Lowell, Mass.), Ashley Erba (Winona Lake, Ind.),
Jillian Fanning (Manlius, N.Y.), Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.),
and Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.).

Racing this weekend for the women are seniors Elizabeth DeVivo (Riverside,
Conn.), Molly McCann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Jackie McCarthy (New
Rochelle, N.Y.), Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) along with captains Nagel and
Sisson. Also competing are juniors Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.),
DevynPryor (Dartmouth, Mass.), Julie Solimine(Haverhill, Mass.), and
sophomores Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland)
and Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.). Allison and Hollowood will make
their collegiate debuts on Saturday.

Last season, the women’s team earned a first place finish with 20 points at
the New Hampshire Dual Meet. Nagel finished first with a time of 17:07.0
and was one of seven top-10 finishers for Providence.

On the men’s side, two All-Northeast Regional performers will return,
junior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and sophomore Harvey Dixon
(Aldershot, England). The team will welcome six newcomers, including
graduate-student Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.), who is a transfer student
from Fordham University.

Providence will race Saad, Quinn, Dixon, along with juniors Liam
Hillery(Smithfield, R.I.) and Benjamin Connor (Derby, England), and
sophomores
Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.), Jake Meredith (Wellfleet, Mass.),
Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), Stephen Robertson (Wakefield,
Mass.), Brendan Sullivan (Foxboro, Mass.), and Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke,
Mass.). Two freshmen, Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jonathan
Estrada (Los Angeles, Calif.), will make their collegiate debuts at New
Hampshire.

The Friars were ranked fifth in the northeast in the USTFCCCA preseason
coaches’ poll on Monday, Aug. 26 and will look to build off a fourth place
finish at last season’s BIG EAST Championships. Last season, the men
finished first at the UNH Dual Meet with 18 points. The men’s team was led
by Quinn who earned a first place finish with a time of 18:26.
