Providence College Women’s Cross Country Opens Season With A Win

The Friars claimed four of the top-five spots.



Durham, N.H. - The Providence College women’s cross country team took home a win after claiming four of the top-five spots at the UNH Dual Meet in Durham, N.H. today, Saturday, Aug. 31. The Friars edged the Wildcats and Crusaders with 29 points. New Hampshire finished second with 34, while Holy Cross finished third with 68 points.



Three Friars crossed the finish line together to claim the top three spots for Providence. Senior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), and senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) all finished with in a time of 17:07 to take first through third, respectively.



Senior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) was the fourth Friar to finish, coming in fifth with a time of 17:53. Junior Julie Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) was the final Friar to score with a 20th place finish. Solimine earned 18 points for the Friars with a time of 18:41.



Freshman Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut after crossing the line with Solimine to earn a 21st place finish with a time of 18:41. Junior Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.) finished the race in a time of 18:52 for a 25th place finish.



Seniors Elizabeth DeVivo (Riverside, Conn.), Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.), and Molly McCann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) also competed for the Friars finishing 27th, 32nd, and 36th, respectively. DeVivo ran the race in a time of 18:59, while McCarthy and McCann finished in times of 19:18 and 19:42, respectively.



Sophomore Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) was the final Friar competing for Providence. Powell ran the race in a time of 19:43 for a 37th place finish.



"We are quite happy with our top four finishers," Head Coach Ray Treacy shared after the race. "It was exactly what we had hoped for. We will look to build off the race and improve on our five through eight finishers. As a staff we will have a better idea for where we stand after the next two weeks but this is a good start to the season."



The Friars will look to build off the win when they travel to Stony Brook, N.Y. for the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.
