Providence College Indoor Track Dominates Distance Medley Relay

The men’s and women’s track teams turned in top-performances in the DMR on day one of the New England Championship in Boston, Mass.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.  - The Providence College men's and women's track teams turned in several strong performances on the first day of the 2013 New England Indoor Track Championships at Boston University in Boston, Mass. on Fri., Feb. 22.  The Friars earned top-honors in the women’s distance medley relay{list of events}.



The women’s distance medley relay team, consisting of senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass.), freshman Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) and junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), earned the New England title with a new meet record of 11:30.75.  Tufts previously held the record with a time of 11:39.08.



The men’s distance medley relay team, consisting of senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand), senior Nikolas Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.), senior Dominc Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) and sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) was the last Providence team to compete on Friday.  The men’s relay team also finished first with a time of 9:45.42



Also of note, juniors Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Elizabeth DeVivo (Riverside, Conn.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,000-meter preliminaries and qualified for tomorrow’s final.  McCarthy finished with a personal best of 2:54.77, and DeVivo finished with a personal best of 2:58.12.  Last year at the Championship, McCarthy placed fifth in the finals with a time of 2:56.16.



 Junior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) and senior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) both competed in the 5,000-meters on Friday.  Roecker finished second with a time of 16:55 and Murphy finished fourth with a personal best of 17:04.  Murphy finished sixth last year with a time of 17:44.97



For the men, senior Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand), freshman Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and freshman Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) competed in the 1,000-meters preliminaries.  Oakley finished first with a time of 2:26.66 and Vercollone finished with the fifth fastest preliminary time of 2:27.79, qualifying for the final which will be held Saturday at 2:15 p.m.   Sophomore Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.), senior Ali Ahmed (Boston, Mass.) and graduate student Anthony Gonsalves (Pawtucket, R.I.) competed in the 5,000-meters.  Hillery finished third overall with a time of 14:28.37, while Ali crossed the finish-line ninth with a time of 14:53.86.  Ali competed in the same event last year and finished fourth with a time of 14:39.44.



The Friars will compete in eight events on Sat., Feb. 23, including the women’s triple jump, mile, 3,000-meters and 4x400-meters and the men’s mile, 3,000-meters, 4x400-meters and 4x800-meters.



Senior Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.) will compete in the women’s triple jump on Saturday.



There will be three Friars competing in the mile: sophomore Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.), Sischo and junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.).  Kohlbrenner finished 22nd at the championship last year with a time of 5:10.83. Sisson has the best qualifying time of 4:44.04 from the URI Sorlien Invitational on Jan. 19.  Former Friar Geraldine Hendricksen currently holds the all-time New England Championship record in the mile with a time of 4:36.14 from the 1992 championship.



Greany and freshman Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) will compete in the 3,000-meters.  Greany’s qualifying time from the URI Sorlien Invitational is the second best at the championship heading into Saturday’s race (9:49.95).



The women’s 4x400-meter relay team will also compete on Saturday.



Channon and freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) will compete in the men’s mile.  Channon holds the third best qualifying time for the mile (4:08.99).

Providence College Indoor Track Shines on Final Day of New England Championships

The men’s and women’s track teams won the women’s mile and the men’s and women’s 3,000-meters on the second day of the championship.

BOSTON, MASS.  - The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams continued a tradition of success on the second day of the 2013 New England Indoor Track Championships at Boston University in Boston, Mass. on Sat., Feb. 23. The Friars earned top-honors in the women’s mile and the men’s and women’s 3,000-meters, bringing their total number of New England Championship titles to five for the weekend.

Junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), sophomore Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) competed in the mile. Sisson had the best qualifying time heading into the event, and turned in a first-place finish with a time of 4:38.49.

Senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and freshman Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) competed in the 3,000-meters for the women. Greany won the 3,000-meters with a time of 9:38.25, while Powell had a personal best with a time of 10:25.49. Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) competed in the 3,000-meters on the men’s side.  Quinn had the best qualifying time heading into the championship, and turned in the first-place finish with a time of 8:11.47.

For the women’s squad, juniors Jackie McCarthy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Elizabeth DeVivo (Riverside, Conn.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,000-meter preliminaries yesterday, qualifying for today’s final. McCarthy finished second with a time of 2:55.12 and DeVivo finished sixth with a time of 2:59.31.

The women’s 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of sophomore Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass.), sophomore Caroline Callaghan (Rochester, N.H.), sophomore Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and Taylor Corder also competed on Saturday and finished with a season best time of 4:02.75 (30th).

The women’s team finished second overall out of 34 teams with 54 points, behind Connecticut who finished with 149.33 points.

On the men’s side, senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) and freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) competed in the men’s mile. Dixon turned in the top-performance in his unseeded heat and finished fourth overall with a time of 4:07.94. Channon finished sixth overall with a time of 4:08.75. Freshman Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and freshman Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) competed in the 1,000-meters finals. Oakley finished third with a time of 2:26.01, while Vercollone finished eighth with a time of 2:38.59.

The 4x400-meter team of freshman Austin King (Kempton, Pa.), senior Nikolas Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.), sophomore Anthony O’Malley (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Jake Meredith (North Eastham, Mass.) ran a season best time of 3:26.76 (24th).

The men’s squad finished sixth overall out of 31 teams with 41 points.

Providence will be back in action next weekend, March 1-2 at the Columbia Final Chance Meet in New York, N.Y.
