Providence College’s Emily Sisson Claims BIG EAST Title To Lead Women’s Cross Country To Its Sixth Conference Crown

Clinches title with four top-seven finishers in a field of 80 competitors.

SOMERS, Wis. - The fourth-ranked Providence College women’s cross country team claimed the program’s sixth BIG EAST conference title today (Nov. 2). The Friars had four of the top-seven finishers, including three in the top four. All five scoring runners from Providence earned All-BIG EAST Honors.

Senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) claimed a first-place finish to win the individual title. Sisson out paced Villanova’s Emily Lipari, last season’s BIG EAST individual champion, by five seconds to earn the program’s first individual BIG EAST title since 2005 (Fiona Crombie ‘05). Sisson’s time of 19:49 crushed the meet record of 20:26.

Sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) was the next Friar to cross the finish line. Collins also came in under the course record with a time of 19:58 for a third-place finish. Senior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) was the third Friar to finish within the top-four for Providence. Nagel claimed a fourth place finish with a time of 20:21.

Freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) turned in a season-best time of 20:26 as the fourth Friar to score. Rocha’s time propelled her to a seventh-place finish for Providence. Senior Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) was the final Friar to score. In her second race of the season, Thek ran the 6k course in a time of 20:48 for a 13th-place finish.

Sophomore Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Bryanna Allison (Lowell, Mass.) were the sixth and seventh Friars to finish the race, respectively. Keating ran the race in a time of 21:51 for a 26th-place finish, while Allison claimed 35th in a time of 22:30.

Sophomore Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) was the final Friar to finish. Powell finished the race with a time of 22:59 to place 47th.

Providence was last named BIG EAST Champions in 2006, when it had four top-10 finishers. Today, the Friars topped third-ranked Georgetown and seven-ranked Butler to claim their sixth conference title. Georgetown finished second with 47 points, while Butler finished third with 66 points.

“It’s another great start to the championship part of the season,” Head Coach Ray Treacy shared on the win. “We are happy to have beaten the number three and seven teams in the country and are looking forward to the next three weeks.”

Sisson, Collins and Nagel have now combined to earn the top-three spots for the Friars in each race the trio has competed in. With the win, the trio has led the Friars to victories in four of the five races they have been a part of.

The Friars will next compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships as the team will look to get a bid for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The regional championships will take place in Bronx, N.Y. at the Van Cortlandt Park Course. The race will kickoff at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15.
