New Orleans, La.

- The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their presence in the USTFCCCA national poll, the men six weeks strong and the women seven. The women’s team was ranked No. 2 in the national poll today (Nov. 5), while the men fell to No. 21.

The women claimed the program’s sixth BIG EAST crown and first since 2006 on Nov. 2. The Friars were led by senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), who claimed Providence’s first BIG EAST individual title since 2005. Sisson was joined by classmates Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia), along with sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) as the five scoring runners. All five earned All-BIG EAST Honors as the final Providence runner crossed the finish line in 13th place, the top 15 runners from the race earn the BIG EAST accolade.

The men finished second at the BIG EAST Championships, their best finish at the championships since they won the conference title in 2006. Providence was led by junior Brian Doyle (Swansea, Mass.), who finished third. Doyle was joined by classmates Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) and Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) along with graduate student Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) as the top five runners to cross the finish line for the Friars. Doyle, Connor, Quinn and Saad all earned All-BIG EAST Honors for the performance at the meet.

On Monday, Nov. 4, the women continued their first place ranking in the regional poll for the seventh consecutive week, while the men remained in fourth for the second consecutive week.

Both the men and the women are back in action on Friday, Nov. 15, when the two teams travel to Bronx, N.Y. to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. The Friars will compete at Van Cortlandt Park in an 11:00 a.m. race.
