Providence College’s Sisson Named National Athlete Of The Week

Sisson claimed the first individual BIG EAST Title for Providence since 2005.


New Orleans, La. - Senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) of the Providence College women’s cross country team was recognized by the USTFCCCA as the National Athlete of the Week today (Nov. 4). Over the weekend, Sisson claimed the BIG EAST Individual Championship Title (Nov. 2).


Sisson out paced Villanova’s Emily Lipari, last season’s BIG EAST individual champion, by five seconds to earn the program’s first individual BIG EAST title since 2005 (Fiona Crombie ‘05). Sisson’s time of 19:49 crushed the course record of 20:26 set by World Cross-Country Champion Lynn Jennings in 1992 to lead the friars to their first Big East title since 2006.


This season, Sisson has led the Friars with four top finishes for Providence, including three first-place finishes. Earlier in the season, Sisson ran to a second-place finish at the Wisconsin Invitational (Oct. 19) and a first-place finish in the Boston College Invitational (Sept. 27).


Sisson also was recognized twice this season with BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week honors. Once for her performance at the Wisconsin Invitational and once for her first place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational on Sept. 14.


Both the men and the women are back in action on Friday, Nov. 15, when the two teams travel to Bronx, N.Y. to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. The Friars will compete at Van Cortlandt Park in an 11:00 a.m. race.
