Former Women’s Cross Country Star Kim Smith Breaks Record At Boston Athletic Association Distance Medley
It marked the second year in a row Smith has taken the B.A.A. series.

BOSTON, Mass. – Former Providence College women’s cross country and track star Kim Smith ’05 won the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) series today (Oct. 13). For her efforts, Smith was awarded a $100,000 grand prize.

Smith broke the previous half marathon record of 1:10:52 with a time of 1:09:14 (1:13 ahead of the second place finisher) on Oct. 13. The 13th B.A.A. half marathon was the third and final event of the 2013 B.A.A. Distance Medley, a three-race series which combines the B.A.A. 5K on April 14, the B.A.A. 10K on June 23, and the B.A.A. Half Marathon. The winner is determined by the fastest cumulative time in the three-race series.

It was the second consecutive year Smith won both the overall B.A.A. Distance Medley and the B.A.A. half marathon. With the win, Smith becomes just the second woman to claim the half marathon title two years straight.

During her four year career with Providence, Smith earned four NCAA titles. She won the 2004 NCAA Cross Country individual title and the 3,000 and 5,000 meter NCAA Indoor Track titles at the 2004 championships. After her career at Providence, Smith went on to become a three-time Olympian for New Zealand, competing at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2012 London Olympic Games.
