Providence College Men’s Cross Country Travels To Stony Brook, N.Y.

The men will look to build a first-place finish at UNH.

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men’s cross country teams will compete at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. The men will race against Columbia, Marist College, and Stony Brook.

The Friars will be competing against 18th-ranked Columbia, who finished second in the region and 17th in the nation last season. Along with being ranked 18th in the nation, Columbia enters Saturday with a third-place regional ranking in the preseason poll. Stony Brook will enter Saturday with a 12th-place regional ranking after a 15th-place finish in last year’s Northeast Regional Championships. Providence will enter with a fifth place regional preseason ranking along with claiming 17 votes in the national preseason poll.

Making their debuts for the Friars are freshmen Billy Bragg (Middletown, N.J.), Jonathan Estrada (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.).

Joining them are sophomores Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.), Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England), Jake Meredith (Wellfleet, Mass.), Brendan Sullivan (Foxboro, Mass.), and Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.). Last season, Costello competed in the Stony Brook invitational, finishing 11th in the 8k race with a time of 26:04.19.

Leading the underclassmen are juniors Benjamin Connor (Derby, England), Brian Doyle (Swansea, Mass.), Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) and Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) along with graduate student Julian Saad (Trumball, Conn.). Quinn led the Friars to a second place finish (47 points) in the 2012 Stony Brook Invitational 8k race with a first place finish in a time of 25:24.45.

Last time out, the Friars finished first (of three) at the UNH Dual Meet on Aug. 31 with a near perfect 17 points in the 6k race. Providence claimed six of the top seven spots with Quinn and Connor crossing the finish line together at 18:12 to take first and second, respectively. For his efforts, Quinn earned BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday, Sept. 10. It marked the first time a Friar earned the honor since David McCarthy ‘12 did so in 2008.
