Providence College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Land In National Poll

The women held onto the No. 1 spot, while the men earned a top-30 ranking for the first time since 2011.

New Orleans, La. - The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams both earned spots in the national poll. The women remained in the top spot at No. 1, while the men earned their first top-30 placing since Nov. 15, 2011 when the team placed 26th.

The women remain ranked first in the country in both the northeast region and within the national poll. The last time the women’s team held the No. 1 ranking for two weeks, was in 1996, the year after the Friars claimed the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship title. In 1996, the Friars held the No. 1 ranking in the poll for six consecutive weeks.

The men’s team took a two spot jump in the regional poll and a found spot on the national top-30 poll. The men started the season with a fifth place ranking in the regional poll in the USTFCCCA preseason coaches poll. This week, the Friars were ranked third in the regional poll and 24th in the national poll. The men knocked off 18th ranked Columbia over the weekend at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Both the men and the women opened the 2013 season with back-to-back wins with a top-three sweep. On the women’s side, seniors Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) and Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) along with sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) took the top-three spots at both the UNH Dual Meet and the Stony Brook Invitational to lead the Friars to consecutive team wins. On the men’s side, juniors Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) along with senior Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Friars in both wins with top-three finishes in both races as well.

The men and the women are back in action on Friday, Sept. 27 when the two teams will compete at the Boston College Invitational set to be held in Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. at 3:00 p.m.
