Providence College's Sisson Named BIG EAST Female Scholar Athlete Of The Year

Emily Sisson nabbed the honor after standout 2013 track and cross country seasons.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) of the women's track and cross country teams was named BIG EAST Female Scholar Athlete of the Year after a successful 2013 track and cross country season. It was announced by the league on April 3, 2014.

The selection was made by the Conference's Academic Affairs Committee. Sisson, who will receive a $4,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies, is the sixth female Providence student-athlete to earn the honor. Teammate Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) was the last Friar to earn the honor (2012).

Sisson led the Friars to their first NCAA Championship cross country title since 1995 with a seventh-place finish out of a field of 250-plus competitor. For her top-40 finish she was named an All-American for the second consecutive season. In addition to her seventh-place finish at the National Championship, Sisson also captured the 2013 BIG EAST individual title.

Sisson outpaced Villanova's Emily Lipari, last season's BIG EAST champion, by five seconds to earn Providence's first individual BIG EAST title since 2005 (Fiona Crombie '05). Sisson's time of 19:49 crushed the course record of 20:26, set by World Cross-Country Champion Lynn Jennings in 1992, to lead the Friars to their first BIG EAST team title since 2006.

Sisson was the Friars' top-finisher in six of the seven races she competed in, including a second-place finish at the Northeast Regional Championship. Sisson was named National Athlete of the Week once (Nov. 4) and BIG EAST Athlete of the Week three times (Sept. 17, Oct. 1, and Oct. 22) for her performances over the course of the 2013 cross-country season.

During the 2013 indoor/outdoor track season, Sisson was BIG EAST Champion in the indoor 3,000 meter and the outdoor 10,000 meter. She claimed Second Team All-America Honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship in the 5,000 meter event. During the outdoor season, Sisson finished sixth at the US Track and Field Championship (June 20) in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:27.33. Sisson also earned First Team All-America Honors in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

For her efforts throughout 2013, Sisson was named Words Unlimited Female Athlete of the Year (Jan. 2). Words Unlimited is a statewide Rhode Island organization of sports writers, sportscasters and sports publicists.
