Providence Hosts Friar Invitational At The Ray Treacy Track

The Friars will compete against Bryant and Stony Brook on Saturday, April 12.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams will be holding the first Friar Invitational on Saturday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. on the Ray Treacy Track. It marks the College's first ever meet taking place on the newly constructed track. There is no admission to watch the meet and it is open to the public.

Providence will be hosting the Bryant and Stony Brook track and field programs. Stephanie Reilly '01, the Head Coach of Bryant, ran at Providence, where she was a member of two New England Cross Country Championship teams (1998 and 1999) and one Big East Cross Country Championship team (1997). Reilly also competed at the 2012 London Olympics in the 3000 meter steeplechase for Ireland.

The head coach of the Stony Brook Seawolves, Andy Ronan '86, coached alongside Friar Head Coach Ray Treacy for six seasons prior to joining Stony Brook. Ronan assisted the Friars in winning six Big East Cross Country titles and helped Providence capture its first NCAA National Cross Country title in 1995.

Ronan ran for the Friars until he graduated in 1986. While competing with Providence, Ronan captured four BIG EAST Cross Country titles and was a two-time Cross Country All-American (1984 and 1986). After graduating from Providence, he began a successful running career, which included a third-place finish in the Boston Marathon (1991). A native of Wexford, Ireland, Ronan represented his country in the marathon at the 1992 Olympic Games and was inducted into the PC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 for his contributions as a Friar.

The Friar Invitational will feature Providence All-American's senior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) and sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) as well as members of the 2013 women's cross country title team.

On the men's side, the meet will hold IC4A Champion junior Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) along with the Friars' top-finisher at the NCAA Championship junior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland). Graduate student Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) will also be competing for the Friars on Saturday. Both runners have posted 4:01 mile times or better this season.

Earlier this season, Providence captured two BIG EAST titles and one IC4A title during the indoor season. The Friars also saw seniors Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Nagel capture All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
