Providence College Men’s Indoor Track Finishes Competition At BIG EAST Championships
Oakley captures top-finish for Friars with second in the one mile run.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College men’s indoor track and field team concluded competition at the BIG EAST Championships yesterday (Feb. 22) at the Armory Track in New York City.

Providence saw sophomore Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) capture second in the one mile run for the men. It marked the second consecutive season Oakley has earned second-place in the one mile run at the BIG EAST Championships. Oakley finished with an IC4A Championship qualifying time of 4:09.94. Classmate Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) finished fourth with a time of 4:10.92, also a IC4A qualifying time.

Sophomore Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) earned fifth in the 1000 meter run with a personal best performance of 2:24.50. Vercollone’s time was an IC4A qualifying time as well.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Providence finished third in junior Phillip Reid (Oceanport, N.J.). Reid finished the race in a time of 8.64. Reid also competed in the men’s high jump, where he finished seventh with a jump of 1.95m.

Sophomore Austin King (Kempton, Pa.) ran a 49.41 in the 400 meter dash final for fifth place overall.

The Friars were strong in the men’s 3000 meter run, capturing four IC4A qualifying times. Graduate students Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.) and Kevin Cooper (Waterford, Ireland) finished third and seventh, respectively. Juniors Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) and Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) joined Saad and Cooper in the 3000 meter run, where the two captured 10th and 12th, respectively.

To close out the day, the Friars finished third in the men’s 4x800 meter relay with a time of 7:40.28 for six points towards the team’s score. Dixon, Vercollone, Oakley and freshman James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine) combined for an IC4A Championship qualifying time.

The Friars finished fifth overall as a team with 58 points, the men’s best finish since 1992, when they also finished fifth overall.

Providence returns to action on Friday, Feb. 28 at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. The meet will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and will conclude on Saturday, March 1.
